break? what break?
Cal's on his weekly "congrats, you haven't killed anyone in the past few days" hour-long break, sitting with his legs dangling off the roof of one of his old hiding spots when he notices something shimmering out of the corner of his eye.
He gets up from his perch and creeps along the edge of the rooftop, eyes peeled for movement. There, behind the old steel factory—something moving. Something big.
He makes short work of catching up to the thing, slipping along fire escapes and darting across rooftops. The thing, it turns out, is some massive creature the length of several buildings, covered in rows of shiny triangular plates. It's slithering out of the slums and towards the farmlands, but doing so in a rather roundabout way.
Clambering ahead of the creature, Cal takes a look at it from the front. The majority of its face--if you could call it a face--is taken up by a mirror, which doesn't seem to be reflecting anything at all. The otherworldly sight unnerves him; just looking at the mirror sets off a cascade of hisses in the back of his mind, and Cal decides that the best thing to do is to stay as far away as possible.
Cal swings himself off a nearby fire escape, intending to drop down to the street below, when the creature turns towards him too quickly for him to react. Instead of slamming into the mirror, however, he finds himself free-falling through space that shouldn't be there.
He lands hard on his shoulder. The ground underneath him, for some inexplicable reason, is grassy.
