"Since this is a special occasion," He finishes the tea and says "I am a skymage with the gifts of wind and warmth and the greater gift of flight. Which means I can influencing the weather through wind and heat, and I can float. My wings are cosmetic. This is common knowledge back home, the next part is secret. I have a magical connection with a pocket dimension, where you can find floating rocks with fountains that can grant skymagery and immortality to people. If you drink from a fountain you will be reborn in it every time your body dies, one person per fountain. I can create one fountain per month, or expand my dimension and create a portal. If I go to your world I can create a portal there while sleeping. I have access to some artifacts that grant some psychic powers at the cost of physical exhaustion. My twin brother also has a dimension and is a skymage too, but his greater gift is warmth, not flight, which means he can control fire. We are ridiculous rich," Pause "and the bar can convert any currency."
"That... Is definitely something. I have... Knowledge about how to get around and fit in back home, I suppose. I know mechanical systems and vehicles, like the walker I mentioned. I installed electricity in a building once. The best thing I could bring to this project is knowledge."
"I wouldn't do this without inside help. Knowing how to navigate your world is very important," Fenris says looking at his wings "How conspicuous my wings are? One of the psychic artifacts does a form of invisibility, but you can't do it for more than 30 minutes and my wings grow back in a day or two."
"I was attempting to leave my workplace. It's a ten minute walk to my home from there. And I was about to start my lunch hour, so it's a good time to go there."
"I have a very small apartment, but it is mine alone. The luxuries afforded by skilled labor, and all. There is a wall that might serve. Would this portal bridge between your world and mine?"
"Yes, but it is invisible while closed. It stays in place but we can put a closet or something around it. My portal's keys... eh, the circumstances when they open tend to be wind related. I could manage a portal that you could open or close by yourself but can't make any promises."
"There is also the fact that I am letting someone I met at a bar, an unknown quantity, into my apartment. As much as you seem a kind and noble-hearted person, is there anything you want to do to gain my confidence?"
"Fair enough," Fenris says "hum... Bar, can you bring up the news articles about me?"
A small pile of newspapers, scientific journals and magazines promptly shows up. The relevant articles show Fenris and his brother Felix (identical face, but red wings instead of white) are in fact very rich, and use their money to finance a lot of charity work, medical and engineering research and they own a magical power plant that provides cheap clean energy. Some articles mention Felix as partying too hard and living too lavishly on the "endless castle" of their own pocket dimension. Others mention Fenris and Felix lobbying for governments to take a instance against "Stormlords Breeding Programs" which seem to divide opinions because many fear the Stormlords.
"As I said before, time is paused while you are here with the door closed. You should eat your lunch here. Someone interesting or helpful might show up, Milliways isn't usually this empty. I will pay. I can pay for more books if you want to."
The bar provides a kind of bean stew with beef and pork accompanied by side dishes of rice, potato fries and vegetables, with a tall cup of ice cold beer.
"Brazilian Feijoada" a napkin explains "and later açai ice cream for dessert."
"Bar can you give me that robot arm thing?" Fenris asks "I need to fish a few things out of my own dimension."
A long metallic tube appears, one side has a four fingered white-gloved hand while the other is attached to what looks like a box with controls.
"Yes, but some mundane stuff too," He fetches something that looks like a backpack, but straps it on the front, most likely because of his wings, he continues trying to fish something else.
He eats soup and potatoes. He declines the beer, already having had two and needing to get back to work sooner or later.
He skims the engineering book, and asks Bar for quotes on several futuristic-to-him tools that it looks like he might need. "Bar, can you draw from my account at the Konigsburg bank?"
Those tools are expensive. They'll wipe out his savings, but they'll also jump-start him on these fascinating electronics and hydrogen fuel-cells and so on... He doesn't want to ask Fenris to pay for them. Whatever. He'll take a loan if the strange winged man offers.
He selects some tools and materials, and a few more books, and a backpack for all this... Stuff. His bank account drains.
"Say, Fenris, I almost want to quit my job and work on... All this. But there's the matter of not getting evicted for failing to pay my rent or starving to death. Would it be much trouble to have you officially hire me at a moderate wage while we plot to stop two wars?"
Fenris turns away from the door and thinks for a moment.
"That sounds reasonable, I wasn't going to be... as formal as your put it, but I have no objections against regular pay if you so desire," Fenris approaches Bar asks what would be a moderate wage and adds 50% to that value "that sounds reasonable?"
"Very. Especially as I've just wiped out most of my savings on tools and books. I'm going to quit the repair-shop this afternoon, and spend the next however long split between using future technology to become rich and powerful enough to influence politics, and researching the causes of the war and ways to stop it, or at least soften the humanitarian issues."
"I like your style. You can have your first wage in advance," Fenris says waving at Bar, where the money appears out of nothing "Use it wisely, I am generous but there are more important goals in mind. Also, could you draw a map to your apartment? Just in case I get lost."
