The many ways of magic

Temple wakes up suddenly, his hand automatically going to his abdomen as he raises from the ground...

...Then he notices the lack of pain and the entirely new surroundings.

A new world, which means that he saved Rajir but his former body got sacrificed in the process. Temple is unlikely to see Rajir or the others ever again, without a proper goodbye this time.

There is no point in feeling miserable, his friends and students are safe, just distant.

Temple decides to be practical. He feels and locates traces of magic coming from that way and follows them until he finds himself knocking on a door of a solitary building.

"First, lets see if you can cast from a spell-book," Temple takes a book from a pocket and offers her, "A spell-book holds multiple magical charges for a single spell. They are hard to make, but once you have one it is possible to recharge them. To use one just feel the magic in it and let it flow through you. This book creates a small light."

If she touches the book, there is a intuitive magical feeling that indicates how to use its spell.

"This is...very different from my kind of magic," she murmurs.

"I know! It is so interesting!"

[swordofdamocles]

"It is indeed. MINOR LIGHT." A small globe of light appears, hovering in midair.

"Great! Okay the next part is a bit consuming, but your spell will help. Do you want to try to memorize a spell?"

[swordofdamocles]

She briefly considers making an unhelpful remark about how both of their systems involve memorizing spells but discards the idea almost immediately. "Yes."

"Sure, there isn't much of a secret to it besides trying to memorize." Temple casts a couple of spells and hands a booklet to her, "The spell will definitely be memorized if you manage to keep it all in your head at once, but it isn't always necessary. Just try to commit things to memory and it will work."

The booklet contains the instructions/description for a spell that creates a brief breeze.

"Feel free to use your spell, but I think at some point you should do without it, purely for academic purposes."

"Is there any particular point to the academic purposes? If you think I'm going to have to do without at some point, that makes sense, but as it stands..."

"Nah. It might help if you want to tutor someone." Temple shrugs, "Forgive me, I like to give a complete education."

"No, that's actually a good reason."

[copycast]

"Okay. I am going to have breakfast. Call me if you need anything, but it really is just a matter of committing the spell's details to memory."

[swordofdamocles]

"Okay..." Even without her new spell, she has a decent memory, especially when she doesn't need to remember it for very long to get it to click. Once that's accomplished, her grandfather shoos her to go eat something herself.

Temple is just finishing making pancakes the regular way (magic is involved, but only to provide heat).

"Hey... Have you finished memorizing already?"

"Yeah."

[copycast]

"And without using your spell. Congratulations! I think it is a new record."

[swordofdamocles]

"I had a pretty good working memory already. Makes abridging spells a little quicker too."

[copycast]

"I imagine it would. Do you want to keep improving your word magic? I am still thinking how to best derive your spell. But I also can imagine you will want to memorize all of everything for the next while. I could take that time to learn more about the world, specifically more about the other kinds of people."

[swordofdamocles]

"Maybe I should spend a little while using my spell to memorize things and then we can work on word magic for a while etcetera? They say a change is as good as a break, you know."

"It takes me a long time before I need a break from magic. But that sounds like a good plan."

[swordofdamocles]

"Mmkay. I may need to borrow my laptop for a bit to look at some word files but otherwise you're free to use it while I'm memorizing things."

"Feel free to borrow your own laptop," Temple says smirking "I need to memorize my own spells too."

[swordofdamocles]

"I don't know how much time that's going to take relative to my own memorization project so I figure it was worth mentioning," she shrugs.

"Reasonable. Do you have a estimate? If it takes more than six hours I might take the time to memorize a legendary or mythical level spell-word."

[swordofdamocles]

"...It depends on how fast I get at using the spell word. I've only cast it the once, I don't really know how long it's going to take to cast it any given number of times repeatedly."

"You can do it repeatedly right now. If you fail somehow, there is a one in ten thousand chance of your pronouncing a nonword which might undo nearby, but it is unlikely to have any effect. Nonword is a burst of purposeless magic, it can be used to brute force break effects... it sounds weird."
