Sometimes witches have powers before they turn. But this is rare, uncommon.

More often, a potential witch displays almost nothing out of the ordinary at all. Just, say, a little more skill with people, a little more natural charisma. An extra dose of something that could almost be called luck, if one were paying attention and on the lookout for witches.

There is one such maybe-potential, right over there. He's not from around here, but he is fluent in Italian and French and German and he professes that English is his first language and laughs when people call him a liar because of his perfect accent. He might not be the most powerful, but a polyglot witch could be useful for something. And who knows, maybe there's more to it.

Maybe someone would care to find out.

If Blair needs a break, Edward has read books in the last decade and a half too.

Blair doesn't need a break. Actually, a break is the opposite of what he needs right now, he needs to keep being here, reading her books. She needs him to distract her, he'd go a little crazy if he stopped helping her while she's hurting, so this works out for everyone involved. Except maybe Edward.

When he runs out of books he switches to Fun Vampire Facts, then a terrifyingly detailed psychological evaluation of his former coven, then his thoughts on how it feels like his power can grow more and brainstorming ideas for how he can help train it to be better, then describing some of the places he's visited in his relatively short time as a vampire, then...

On and on and on.

So Edward just sort of... hangs out.

After what feels like a lifetime to at least one member of the trio, someone's heart speeds up. And then it stops.

She rockets to her feet with a slightly strangled gasp.

[all_too_familiar]

Blair finishes his sentence, holds up a hand to Edward and thinks, Give her a minute.

[honey_twining]

Edward gives her a minute.

[poll_the_stars]

"Aaaauuuughhhhhh," she enunciates.

[all_too_familiar]

"You good?"

[poll_the_stars]

She considers this. Deep breath.

"Aaaaaaugh," she elaborates.

[all_too_familiar]

"Use your words."

[poll_the_stars]

"I'm thinking of two in particular right now."

[all_too_familiar]

"'Fuck you,' 'thank you,' or 'worth it'?"

[poll_the_stars]

"Yes."

[all_too_familiar]

Now you're good, pronounces Blair.

[honey_twining]

"So you're not having belated second thoughts?"

[poll_the_stars]

"Not yet, no," she says. "But the real test comes later, I think." With people.

[honey_twining]

"Well. Hunting lesson?"

[poll_the_stars]

"Hunting lesson. Let's go murder some innocent wildlife."

[all_too_familiar]

Snort.

[honey_twining]

They go find some innocent wildlife. It is easily located, easily caught, easily killed. It is not easily table mannersed, but that will come with practice.

Isn't she glad she brought extra clothes!

After her third she pronounces that this has been enough innocent wildlife for today for her taste.

"... Unfortunately now I don't have much to do immediately," she observes. "Hm. This may have been a flaw in my plan."

"Well, Blair ran out of books, but I didn't, if you haven't lost your taste for reading aloud. One of us could also nip out and bring you something to read. You don't seem imminently about to require subdual by two people, although if you require it by one I'd be better at it than him."

[poll_the_stars]

"No books for now, but later, probably. Thank you, though." She looks contemplative. "What I would really like to know is if I'm a witch or not. Because, kind of important. If I am one, it's not immediately obvious."

[honey_twining]

"Well, you may not be. If you are it will manifest one way or another eventually."

[poll_the_stars]

"Hm."

Yvette looks up at the sky.

"Magic powers, magic powers, become known to me, something something, poetry?"
