For a brief moment, in a certain part of fairyland there is a tear that leads to the cold sky above a snow-covered hilly forest somewhere in the mortal world.

"Do you want some spice grass?" Luck asks, offering her some spice grass. "It's especially nice after there's been a night."

[witchwatcher]

Time for a little lie, to test it. "No thanks. I had some earlier."

[alicornucopia]

"You didn't like it?" Chew chew.

[witchwatcher]

"Not particularly. I think everything in fairyland probably tastes weird. Not meant for humans."

[alicornucopia]

"Huh, I didn't know that."

[witchwatcher]

"Would crackers taste weird to you, I wonder?" She tears open a paper package and munches on one.

[alicornucopia]

"I'm not going to eat that, I don't even know what it is."

[witchwatcher]

"Fair enough. I'd better go find Scatter, she's my ride home."

[alicornucopia]

"Did she try spice grass yet?"

[witchwatcher]

"Probably not. She cares about food even less than me." The crackers get put away (and written off to be burned later, since they're open). Her flying thing lifts into the air and starts to move away.

[alicornucopia]

"Come back!"

[witchwatcher]

...That's not enough by itself to tell if this fairy thinks she has her. She plays along and comes back. "Uh, what."

[alicornucopia]

"Tell me your real name."

[witchwatcher]

She gives a dramatic sigh. "That's what I thought. Sorry Luck, I didn't actually eat any spice grass. I was trying to see if that other fairy was lying about food and names. Bye." And she zooms off.

[alicornucopia]

"Hey! HEY!" yells Luck, but she's slower in the air than Promise or a Steelwing.

[witchwatcher]

Copycat declines to lead Luck towards Promise. She flies in a random direction for a while, reapplies the notice-me-not, and circuitously wends back to where Promise probably is.

Promise is where she was left, studying a bullet.

"How's things?"

[imeanforever]

"Things are okay." Promise hands her three golden bullets.

[witchwatcher]

"Ooh, shiny. Many thanks. How long do you think it'll be before it's safe to go to your tree?"

[imeanforever]

"A few weeks, probably. We could risk it now if you're not going to be coming back and forth that long."

[witchwatcher]

"I can come back again in a few weeks. Risk is to be avoided if at all possible."

[imeanforever]

"It'll never be completely risk-free."

[witchwatcher]

"Does it have to be you who gets the cutting?"

[imeanforever]

"No. But you and Scatter could come find me here if he caught you."
