Sea monsters aren't typically in this area, but sometimes things can go wrong and a sea beast will rise up from the depths to try and drag the ship down with them to munch on the tasty humans inside. Sometimes when this happens, the ship gets away, if the people on it are clever or have the right enchanted items or have a particular talent for magic. More often than not, though - they don't.

So even when a sea monster attack is very, very unlikely, if Lirlaveth notices a ship anywhere nearby, she'll put what she's doing on hold and quietly follow the ship to make sure it's not going to be attacked by a murderous monster that wants to eat humans. Or, if it is, to help prevent the humans from becoming food.

She's spotted one such ship, and so even though it means putting her study into enchantment on hold, she goes to follow it to make sure it'll be all right. Probably just paranoia (sea beast attacks aren't that common), but it might turn out to be justified one day.

Idalta brightens. "Oh, you're an artificer too? Cool. I've always wanted to know how siren enchantment works. I've talked to some of the local titans and sprites and learned a few tricks, but it's harder to casually wander over to chat with a sprite, on account of all the ocean in the way."

Lirlaveth smiles and nods. She motions from herself to the ocean, a little wryly. It is rather hard to find study buddies from another species when you're in an ocean. Then she motions to herself and Idalta and her smile broadens a bit. Potential nerdery?

"I can totally talk artificing with you," Idalta assures her. "Actually - do you know any titan languages? I can get by in the Silver Hills dialect and I mostly understand Black River. Since you're mute and all..."

She shakes her head, a little sadly.

"Want to learn some?"

Nod! Not talking is very annoying.

"Great, that'll give us something to do while my sisters take their sweet time getting here. Maybe they went back to find you a pair of trousers."

She turns to face Lirlaveth more directly, and starts speaking and signing simultaneously. "The first five signs I learned were 'hello', 'goodbye', 'please', 'thank you', and 'what'. Need those again?"

She watches raptly, then carefully replicates the five signs. She asks for a repeat of 'please' (by holding up three fingers to signify 'third sign') to make sure she is getting it right, but otherwise copies them perfectly.

"Nicely done! Yeah, you got those fine. So then there's numbers, which, yes, one through five aren't hard, one two three four five, but then there's six, seven, eight, nine, ten..."

Well that's just neat and tidy, being able to count to ten on one hand is - maybe not relevant for her, she doesn't need her fingers to count, but it's still kind of cool!

One-two-three-four-five-six-seven-eight-nine-ten, one after another. Also done perfectly.

She would like to be able to speak very much.

"Nice!" says Idalta, with the same sign she used for 'nicely done'. "I only know the numbers up to twenty, but here's eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen - got those?"

Copy, nod. This is all pretty straightforward, the trouble's remembering it later and keeping everything straight.

"Sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty. Okay, count to twenty for me."

One-two-three-four-five-six-seven-eight-nine-ten-eleven-twelve-slight mistake that she pauses and frowns at, and then corrects to make thirteen-fourteen-fifteen-sixteen-seventeen-eighteen-nineteen-twenty.

"Nice memory," says Idalta, with the same sign for 'nice' again and then a new one for 'memory'. "Then there's, let's see, 'human' and 'siren' and 'titan' and 'sprite'..."

Lirlaveth smiles, and signs, Thank you.

Human, siren, titan, sprite - there's a surprising amount of personality in the signs, she wasn't expecting that. It's interesting - which along with how she would like to be able to speak right fucking now makes this very straightforward. For now. She expects she'll slow down later.

"So then 'siren' is related to 'water', 'titan' is related to 'stone', 'sprite' is related to 'fly', and 'human' is related to 'speak'," she goes on.

Oo! It's logical! She approves! Logical means it's easier for her to figure out later!

She copies the signs. Eeee, ability to communicate.

"And you've probably noticed my favourite sign by now," she repeats the sign for 'nice'. "It means something like - 'exemplary', 'excellent', 'success'."

Lirlaveth giggles silently, and nods.

She copies it! Then she holds up a finger to mean wait, signs Memory and then signs Speak.

"Ooh, you picked up 'memory', nice," says Idalta. ('You' seems to be accomplished by pointing.)

Smile. Nod. Not quite what she was aiming for, but she realizes she wasn't super clear.

She points at herself, she signs Memory, then she points at Idalta and signs Speak.

Does that get across what she's trying to say?

"...I'm feeling the lack of vocabulary here," says Idalta. "Your memory and me speaking could be a lot of things. You want me to tell you if you're remembering something right...?"
