Witches aren't troubled by the cold, but the same isn't true about the wind.
Temperance wasn't afraid of falling from her brand new cloudpine branch, but she might drop her books and that was nearly as bad. She decided to land until the weather quieted down.
Instead of quieting it down, the weather got worse, snow started falling and it was hard to navigate even with Faramund covering her with his wings.
Temperance didn't hear anything, just saw a glimpse of the thing, just enough for her brain to register the combination of snake and mirror and...
...then she found herself under warm sunlight, feeling a gentle breeze over her skin. Blinking away the sudden light and the melting snow in her eyes, she found herself surrounded by a green woodland that was too warm to be anywhere near she remembered being.
In short, Temperance and her daemon were very confused.

"Mama and Papa are in the study," Edie reports after a moment.

Temperance looks at everything with wonder.

"I wouldn't mind meeting them now," Temperance says.

The twins lead Temperance down the hall to a room also filled with books, but with a desk given pride of place. A man in his early fifties and a woman who, if Temperance only knew it, remarkably resembles Eva Magyar, are waiting for them.

This is a situation worth of good manners. Temperance bows and introduces herself.

"I am Temperance Lytess of the Delmarva Clan," She says "and this is my daemon Faramund."

The Professor smiles at her. "Welcome. I understand you're unusually out of the ordinary even for our school." The woman--Erika--snorts. He ignores her with the ease of long practice and continues, "since you likely have no legal presence here, and are going to be returning to your home as soon as possible, it would be impractical to enroll you. But our school's purpose, above all, is to be a sanctuary. You're welcome here." The two exchange an unreadable look.

Edie raises an eyebrow, apparently picking up on whatever nonverbal communication is going on.

Temperance is already considering what is going on, but decides that she can discover later.

"Is there any legal precedent for me to get a legal presence in case it comes up?" Temperance says "I have no idea how I got here and much less how to get back, if it wasn't for the fact that I expect to live for centuries I would be much more frenetic about trying to find a way back."

"Precedent, yes, legal, not entirely," the Professor admits. "Sadly, it's less uncommon for mutants arriving at the school to need to leave whatever pasts they may have behind entirely."
"Centuries?" Erika asked.

"I can imagine they would," Temperance says to the Professor, to Erika she says "My species doesn't die of old age, we live until killed or just get bored with life."

"Wow. I've heard of dying of boredom before, but I didn't think it was ever literal."

"There are some mutants who can live indefinitely," Charles said, "but none of them have boredom as an end condition for their life." He winced. "Aside, I suppose, from one who was known to be able to become younger deliberately. He, I suppose, could simply refrain." One of Erika's hands clenched into a white-knuckled fist.

'He's talking about (Schmidt/Shaw)' Edie explained telepathically. 'He's still a sore spot for Mama, even now.'

"I don't want to put the idea to practical use soon," Temperance ponders "but now I am wondering about the potential results of Witches and Mutants," she shrugs "but that isn't important. I would like to ask for sanctuary, possibly in exchange to my magic. Did you daughter explain what I can do with her trick?"

Charles's lips twitch upwards into a small smile. Erika grins in a manner vaguely reminiscent of a shark.
"She said that you have real magic, not just one single ability," Charles says. "She didn't go into much detail beyond that."

"It is very versatile," Temperance says confident "it can't do literally everything, but it can influence natural things, like the environment."

If she is allowed to, Temperance will proceed to make some small demonstration of her abilities, she opens the window and calls a bird to her hand (it is immediately released unharmed), she then makes the room temporarily colder and warmer, ending with making a small rock (a paper-weight from Charles' desk) glowing like a light bulb.

All those spells are verbal and fairly simple.

"I can make bigger things," Temperance explains "but those require more preparation and components."

"Fascinating," Charles mused.
"What can you do with metal?" Erika wondered.

'Emily wanted me to tell you' Edie telepathed with a little chagrin, 'that the reason that everyone looked so amused a moment ago is that I--to quote her, mind--gave a psychic squawk when you referred to my telepathy as a trick.'

'What is so amusing about it?' Temperance thinks back.

"I can make metal harder, sharper and immune to rusting, or scry to find it" Temperance responds out loud "and some spells can be used to help shape or fix metal objects in simply ways, but my magic isn't very suited to deal with human technology more advanced than a steam engine"

'Mm, it's a family thing,' Edie thought to her. 'Sort of an in-joke.'

"Immune to rusting and harder sound useful," Erika mused. "Sharper and finding it I can do myself."

"She also told us that there were some other useful things she might be able to do after researching them for a while," Edie mentioned, "but it will take a month before she knows if she can or not."
Erika raised an eyebrow. Edie shook her head, minutely.

"I don't have a full rune dictionary with me," Temperance says "I need to reconstruct and rediscover them from memory and divination. I definitely will need to have some quiet time, inventorying what I have with me, what I need to prioritize figuring out now and later. There is a divination that I should perform tonight which I want to prep well ahead. Get the right herbs and a place to write the runes."

"That won't be a problem," Charles said. "Do you need to be by yourself, or can you share a room?"

[mage_see_mage_do]

"I don't mind sharing," Temperance answered "I really only need a place to keep my things dry. I could even sleep outside, the cold doesn't bother me."

Faramund whispers in her ear.

"It should be noted that Daemon should not be touched and everyone that comes in school should be informed of that."

Edie should be aware how important that is.
